If we were raised to sacrifice ourselves for others, to be accommodating and put our needs last, it’s not surprising that, as adults, we sometimes find it difficult to stand up for ourselves.
Sometimes we don’t speak up for ourselves because we don’t know how to express our needs or how to set boundaries. Or we endure challenging circumstances for too long, hoping that something will magically change somehow, and it never does.
This might look like remaining in unhappy relationships (or work situations) where we’re not being seen and feel unimportant, or we isolate ourselves and remain alone.
And deep within ourselves we know that there should be more to life and that we deserve better, even though we don’t really know how yet.

WHY SEETTING GOALS AND REPEATING AFFIRMATIONS ISN’T ENOUGH
Do you know this? You set yourself a goal and are absolutely determined to get there. You are excited, you get started, you stick to a new routine and then something unexpected happens and you just drop everything.
It feels like you started taking all the right steps towards your goal, your desire and then, all of a sudden, you tumble back down the metaphorical steps and fall even deeper than where you started out.
- You may have been determined to be more confident and to develop self-love, you may have repeated affirmations, written a gratitude journal, meditated and tried to overcome your anxiety and insecurities, but nothing really seemed to stick long-term.
- You may have started diets over and over again, just to find yourself back at your starting weight.
- You may have really tried to finally speak up in front of that one person. You’ve practiced your lines, you were determined to set a boundary and then you found yourself accommodating their needs again and dismissing your own.
Let me tell you, this has nothing to do with willpower, determination or intelligence. There is nothing wrong with you.
It is your subconscious emotions and thought patterns that are keeping you from what you truly want.
And no matter how hard you try with your conscious mind (5-10%) to get to that goal, the subconscious and unconscious mind (90-95% in total) are pulling you back over and over again.
It is impossible to pull a heavy truck with a tricycle. We need to learn how to drive that truck. We need to get the subconscious mind on board, if we want to make lasting changes.
It takes the same amount of effort to endure a life you hate than it takes to create a life you enjoy.
